A Motor Generator Set consists of an electric motor powering a generator. The purpose of the set is to convert a value or type of voltage into another. Usually an AC, 3 Phase, 60 Cycle motor is used to drive a generator to produce DC Motor or AC Power with a different Voltage or Cycle output.

The construction of a motor generator set naturally isolates the generator completely from the incoming mains. The equipment and generator receiving the power are shielded from voltage surges, spikes, and sags that can produce damage.
Mechanics and/or electricians can maintain DC motor generator equipment. No specialists are required to for maintenance purposes. In addition, with a single-shaft, horizontal motor generator set, there is no wear out of the gear, belt, or coupling. There are no brushers or commutators to replace. The exciters are brushless.
